Manurewa High School wins Secondary School 10 Aside - 4 August

Manurewa High School won the 2010 Counties Manukau Rugby Football Union Secondary School Girls 10 Aside Tournament when they beat Tuakau College 20-5 in the final held at Waiuku College early August.

In a game that could have gone either way, Tuakau had the majority of possession and territory in the first half which was a great result from the team who lost their first match of the day. In the end, the more experienced Manurewa side won and also went through the whole tournament undefeated.

The level of skill and commitment from the players was impressive and was appreciated by the hundreds of spectators made up of Waiuku College students, parents and supporters of their teams. The five teams who entered the competition were Manurewa High School, Tuakau College, Papakura High, Waiuku College and Rosehill College.

The preparation level varied between the schools; with some already part of a competition and some only having their first training days before the tournament.  Despite the differing experience between the teams the score lines in the matches were closer than many expected and the enthusiasm and competitiveness was very close.

Thank you to Judith Coe and Waiuku College for their hospitality and to the student referees and the students who performed a Haka at the end of the tournament.

U15 Development Day - 26 July

Fifty eight players from teams across the CMRFU rugby region attended the U15 Development day held at Wesley College, Sunday 25 July.

The day started out with a yoyo test, which is designed to test the fitness levels of the players. The players then transitioned through four skills stations designed to teach the fundamental skills of the game. These stations were Tackle, Contact, Handling and counter attack. There was an abundance of talent on display which is encouraging for the future Counties Manukau Rugby.

In the second part of the day the Steelers players joined in with the skill station coaches and worked with the players on how to approach their role specifically. This was very positive for the young players as they got to mix and mingle with some up and coming stars of the game and learnt how to carry out their role to a very high standard.

Two quads of twenty six players will be selected near the end of the normal school/club competition. Notification will be sent to the TIC's and the teams will be placed on the website.

CMRFU wishes to acknowledge Wesley College, Mike Tod and Chris Bean for allowing us to use the facilities and very kindly offering their services and I'd also like to thank all the coaches and support staff who assisted with the day;  Julian Stone (CMRFU U16's head coach), Sam Higgins (Steelers head trainer), Pat Flavell (CMRFU U20's coach), Chris Bean (CMRFU U18's coach), Nick Leger (Player Development Manager), Milton Haig (Steelers head coach), Kerry Petrie (CMRFU Referee education officer) Dameon Chaney (CMRFU Rugby development officer), Annette Smith (CMRFU Liaison Officer); Counties Manukau Steelers: Jamie Chipman, Ray Lee-lo, August Pulu, Mark Selwyn, Ahsee Tuala, Shaun Knight and Baden Kerr.
