MPSSA Year 5 & Year 6 Rippa Day
Over 300 players and spectators took part in the Manurewa
Primary School Sports Association Year 5 and Year 6 Rippa Day held at Leabank Park in Manurewa last Thursday.
Steeler Baden Kerr
had been delivering a rippa programme to the schools in Manurewa and the
tournament was a fantastic way to finish off the programme.
Roscommon won Pool A and The Gardens won Pool B and will now
go on to represent their cluster at the Counties Finals with the eventual
winner representing Counties Manukau at the National Rippa Championships held
in Wellington.
Apart from the skills on display and the closeness of the
matches, another highlight of the day were the free Frisbees that were thrown
out. Whoever caught one were given a
prize.
The day was made a huge success thanks to Opura Takatainga
from CM Sport, James Cook and Manurewa
High School students who
officiated the matches, Kelvin Moana and all the teachers, sports
co-ordinators, parents, administrators and players.

the new game called Ultra-Rip. Puni, Buckland, Pukekohe North, Tuakau
Primary, Kingsgate and Bombay Primary schools also entered teams.
Ultra-Rip is a new hybrid of sevens and rippa, designed by CMRFU
Rugby Development Officers Dameon Chaney and Jeremy Wara to encourage
participants to get a better understanding of the fundamental skills and
rules of rugby in a non-contact way.
A big thank you to students from Waiuku, Pukekohe and Tuakau
Colleges, along with coaches, parents, teachers and supporters who
helped referee the matches and the schools, parents and sports
co-ordinators for making the day possible.
Good sportsmanship was highly visible at the end of the games with lots of cheering and handshaking between all the schools.
