Onewhero take the win over Papakura!

Onewhero Summit Homes moved themselves away from the foot of the ladder as they accounted for Papakura 78-12 in the Counties Power Game of the Week Saturday.

It was the second win of the season for a side that has proven it can match it with the leading sides in the competition.

New PIC Steelers squad member Cameron Roigard celebrated his rep call-up by scoring a hat-trick of tries on his way to collecting a solo haul of 31 points in the match. Filimone Tufui also had a hat-trick for the home side.

Pukekohe Mitre 10 Mega kept their semi-final aspirations alive with a crucial 51-30 win over rivals Bombay at Colin Lawrie Fields.

The two sides have had a strong and at times fiery rivalry in recent seasons and Pukekohe were delighted to get one over the reigning McNamara Cup champions.

“The score didn’t really reflect the overall game – it was actually a pretty tight encounter,” Pukekohe coach Sean Polwart said.

“We prepared really well for Bombay. We sort of had a couple of weeks. It was nice to see a plan come together.

“The Bombay-Pukekohe rivalry goes back a fair way and we had our sponsors day so we had a few guys down there that had played a few games for the club. So we had a few of those guys come and speak the guys because we have a young team.

“There was definitely a little something extra going into this game.”

Karaka bounced back to winning ways and moved up to second on the standings with a 17-10 win over Manurewa Kidd Contracting in what could prove vital in terms of home semi-finals.

The close-fought affair wasn’t a dour affair despite the low scoring nature of the game.

“When you look at the score line you think it was pretty tight and defensively oriented but both sides attacked and it was a pretty good game of rugby really,” Karaka coach Craig Hill said.

They are pretty direct with their running and attacked our 10-12 channel but Baden [Kerr] and Orbyn [Leger] were great defensively.

“Our boys up front were great. Our set piece was good and I am really happy.”

Karaka was the most represented club in the PIC Steelers squad and they, like all other clubs, will lose those rep players after next weekend.

But Hill is comfortable his side is well-placed to deal with that.

“Obviously it is going to impact but we knew that from the start and it is going to give some of the other boys some opportunities.

“Our P2 team has been playing really well and some individuals have been stepping up so they are going to get their shot in the Prem 1 grade.

“Probably not so much in the forwards – Mickey [Woolliams] didn’t play yesterday and he is the only contracted forward.”

Ardmore Marist South Auckland Motors had little trouble in accounting for Patumahoe Troydon Patumahoe Hotel 43-10 at Bruce Pulman Park and remain top of the standings after one completed round.

Doug Sanft’s side raced out to a 31-3 lead at halftime but the gutsy Patumahoe side kept in the fight to prevent a hiding.

“What I wanted from the boys yesterday was a bit of effort and I think I saw some of that,” a happy Sanft said. “But to be honest I saw it from both sides.

“Patumahoe turned up to play. I know they probably lacking motivation because they’re not in top four but they pushed hard.”

At the time of writing the schedule for the next three weeks has not been confirmed although each club with have one home game, one away fixture and a bye.

“I would rather have the bye first and then have the two games leading up to the semi-finals,” Sanft said. “In saying that it is what it is and you just have to get on with it.”

Ardmore Marist achieved the Premier 1-Premier 2 double with a 31-12 win against Patumahoe Dave Redshaw Electrical. Pukekohe PPG Distributors also had a double victory by beating Bombay 22-18 while Karaka beat Manurewa Wise Property Management 46-28.

Ardmore Marist, Karaka, Patumahoe and Pukekohe comprise the top four heading into the abbreviated second round.

Ardmore Marist moved into second place on the Sid Marshall Shield Premier 3 table with a 66-15 thumping of Tuakau. Te Kauwhata remained in top spot with a 22-5 win over Patumahoe Bar & Kitchen while Puni edged Drury 7-3.

Patumahoe Albycon Ltd eased into the Massey Cup U21 championship final with a 44-14 win over Papakura at Patumahoe Domain, where next week’s final will be played.

Manurewa ensured the two season-long rivalry between the two clubs will continue as they beat Karaka 50-15. The match will be a replay of last year’s final that went the way of Manurewa.

Waiuku picked up the U85kg Cup with a convincing 22-0 win over Pukekohe. Beachlands Maraetai had their second win of the season as they thrashed Te Kauwhata 32-5. Papakura had little problem beating Onewhero Bottle’O Tuakau 32-7 while Patumahoe Pak N Save moved back into the top four with a 22-5 win over Karaka.
