The Counties Manukau Heat sit at the top of the Farah Palmer Cup table, after recording their fourth straight win of the season. The Heat defeated the Bay of Plenty Volcanix 45-12 at the Tauranga Domain yesterday.

The Heat ran out to a 28-0 half time lead, dominating the opening half, before the hosts struck back early in the second spell. The Heat managed to hold on though, and only conceded two second half tries. Renee Wickliffe lead the way, scoring a hat trick, while Victoria Subritzky-Nafatali, Badinlee Munro-Smith, Lauryn Steed and Krystal Murray all dotted down once each. Hazel Tubic had a good day with the boot, kicking five conversions.

Davida White’s side are back at home this weekend, looking for their fifth win of the season. They take on Wellington at ECOLight Stadium on Friday 9 September at 5:05pm. The game will be the curtain raiser to the Steelers vs Wellington match, which is also the inaugural Jonah Lomu Memorial Trophy fixture at 7:45pm. The Heat game will again be televised live on Sky Sport. Make sure you come along to ECOLight Stadium and support our ladies. Gates open at 4:30pm on Friday 9 September and tickets are available at the CMRFU Office at the stadium during the week, or at www.iticket.co.nz or at the Gate on Game Day.

The men’s B Black side came away with a 42-24 victory over Northland B in their match at Marist RFC. It’s their second victory from two games. It was tit for tat in the opening 10 minutes as both teams fought hard for dominance, but it didn’t take long for Counties Manukau to find the try line. Quick ruck ball resulted in space for Desma Liaina to score the first of their four tries in the first half. Tevita Nabura, Josh Stol and a second to Liaina were their tries in the first spell. A penalty right on half time gave Counties B’s Black a 25-10 lead.

Dominant set piece, followed by go forward and continuity led to another three tries in quick succession. Liaina dotted down for his hat trick, while Jarred Adams and Ray Laulala also scored.

The game opened up in the final 20 minutes and despite a number of line breaks from Counties, they weren’t able to score. Northland made the most of the turnover ball and they scored the final 14 points of the match. Eukharis Simanu, John (Tito) Fifita, Desma Liaina and Ray Laulala were acknowledged by the team for their strong performances and the celebrated the victory during the bus ride home.

It was a close result for the Counties Manukau B’s Red, who just fell short 25-21 to Bay of Plenty in Whakarewarewa. The hosts opened the scoring with a penalty. Counties B’s Red then replied with the first try of the game. Joe Ikenasio made a break down the right wing which saw Harry Fitzsimmons cross the line. The try was converted by Nathan de Thierry to give Counties a 7-3 lead. Shortly after, Sam Furniss scored under the posts to make it 14-3. Bay of Plenty responded with a penalty and a try to close the gap, but Liam Daniela scored just before half time to give Counties B’s Red a 21-13 lead at the break.

Bay of Plenty scored the only points in the second half. They scored a try after Counties conceded a number of penalties to make it 21-18 and then right on fulltime the hosts stole the win with a converted try.
