Rep Round-Up – 19 September, 2016

DateMon, 19 Sep 2016

The Counties Manukau Heat made history on Saturday in their top of the table Farah Palmer Cup clash against Auckland at Massey Park. They handed nine-time champions Auckland their first defeat since 2013, winning 7-3 in horrible wet conditions.

The Heat had the majority of the possession and while they were missing a few key players, they managed to hold Auckland out. Victoria Subritzky-Nafatali scored the Heat’s only try, while Hazel Tubic converted. 7-3 was the half time score and that remained the full time result. The victory meant the Heat went through the Farah Palmer Cup round-robin undefeated and they are top of the table going into the finals.

They will take on the Wellington Pride in their semi-final at ECOLight Stadium, Pukekohe at 12pm on Saturday 24 September. Entry is Free so make sure to get on down and support our ladies. It will be a massive occasion.

The Counties Manukau B Black team had a great 38-12 win over Bay of Plenty B in their match over the weekend. Counties played with the strong wind at their backs in the first half, so they made the most of that advantage. Desma Liaina scored two tries, while Cameron Flavell and Patrick Masoe scored a try each. Bradford Lemalufaito’aga converted three of the four tries and the B’s Black had a convincing 26-0 lead at the break.

Bay of Plenty came out strong in the second half and within 15 minutes they had scored two tries and had closed the gap. The B’s Black held onto the ball into the wind, even from their own try line and this paid dividend as they surged up the field, demonstrating excellent handling skills in trying conditions. Counties scored two more tries in the second spell to Josh Dowsing and Gene Te Amo and they came away with a 38-12 victory.

The B’s Red had another tight battle, but unfortunately fell just short, 20-16 to Taranaki. Playing into a strong wind in the first half, Counties scored the first points of the match through a penalty to Kalione Hala after 20 minutes. Play continued to be a tight battle and the first try went to Taranaki, after their forwards bashed away at the Counties line. They took the lead 5-3.

With a strong wind at their backs in the second spell, the B’s Red scored their first try after 15 minutes. Shaun Muir’s try came off the back of a good lineout drive. They hit the lead again 8-5. Counties backed Muir’s try up five minutes later, when Richard Judd made a break, passing the ball through a number of hands for Savelio Ropati to eventually score in the left hand corner. Taranaki managed to get some territory after a few Counties’ mistakes and their forwards went over again to close the gap to 13-10. Nathan de Thierry kicked a penalty to make it 16-10.

But with 10 minutes on the clock, Taranaki capitalised on the B’s Red being down to 14 men due to a yellow card and they scored and then kicked a penalty to steal victory 20-16.
