The Counties Manukau Heat got their Farah Palmer Cup campaign off to a great start, beating Waikato 29-0 in wet and cold conditions in Hamilton.
Arihiana Marino, Langi Veainu, Aroha Savage, Victoria Subritzky-Nafatali and Renee Wickliffe all scored tries for the Heat, while Hazel Tubic kicked two conversions. The Heat have a bye this weekend, but will host North Harbour at Massey Park in Papakura at 1:00pm on Saturday 20 August.
In other pre-season results, the Under 19’s defeated Northland 36-7 and the Men’s B Red side beat Auckland 34-5.
On Friday night at ECOLight Stadium in Pukekohe, the Steelers and Samoa A celebrated the life of Peter Fatialofa as they battled it out in the Mitre 10 Cup pre-season fixture.
The Steelers won the Peter Fatialofa Memorial Trophy by defeating Samoa A 43-3.
The Steelers next game is against Northland and the All Blacks in the Game of Three Halves this Friday night at 5:30pm at ECOLight Stadium. Gates open at 4:30pm.
