Waiuku sneak past Te Kauwhata to confirm semi match-up

Waiuku edged defending Sid Marshall Shield champions Te Kauwhata 13-5 in a match that determined semi-final match-ups on Saturday.

The win for Waiuku means they will face second qualifiers Drury at Drury Domain in next weekend’s semi-finals.

Puni thrashed Manurewa 60-5 to jump to the top of the standings after round robin play and won the Bill Marsh Cup in the process.

They will also host Te Kauwhata in the other semi-final next weekend.

Maramarua finished their campaign on a high after beating Patumahoe 17-5 while Te Kohanga didn’t disgrace themselves in losing to Pukekohe’s Bob Chandler Cup side 62-24.

Patumahoe eased by Bombay 38-0 in an all-Bob Chandler contest at Bombay.

It means top qualifiers Karaka will host Bombay in one semi-final while Patumahoe hosts Pukekohe in the other next weekend.

Karaka won the Don Shuker Cup, which had already been confirmed heading into the final round.

Karaka’s U85kg side scored an impressive 26-17 win over Tukapa from Taranaki to advance to the third round of the NZ Barbarians Cup national U85kg competition.
