Onewhero Counties Bulk Haulage/Carters get to hold onto the Golden Gumboot for a bit longer, after they defeated Te Kauwhata Envirowaste 37-0 at Te Kauwhata 1.

The Golden Gumboot is a trophy that goes on the line every time these two sides meet and Onewhero were stoked to have come away with the prized possession again.

Te Kauwhata defended well in the first half, with Onewhero having about 60% of the ball but only managing to score once. Onewhero coach Adam Cathcart said their first try came from centre Leroy Nahi.

“We were just working away and they kept defending and we couldn’t score and then we managed to string a few phases together and then the ball touched a few hands in the backline and Leroy touched down in the corner”.

“It was a tough game. Te Kauwhata are renowned for always turning up and being pretty niggly and upsetting the ball at rucks and that’s exactly what they did. It was tough we battled away and after leading 13-0 at the break, we finally wore them down slowly and managed to score a few more tries at the end, so yea I was pretty pleased.”

Cathcart’s happy to take the five points on offer, especially with a big log jam at the top of the Challenge Cup table.

“Yea we’ll take all the points we can, especially cause we have a tough road to finish off the first round. We have some big games coming up and we will just take all the points while we can.”

Te Kauwhata’s Maake Vaimohea was awarded the A S Wilcox & Sons Limited Player of the Day award for making plenty of strong carries. He went home with a bag of vegetables from A S Wilcox & Sons Limited.

Ardmore Marist South Auckland Motors got back into the winners circle, with a 48-0 win over Papakura Ray White at Bruce Pulman Park.

Papakura came out firing in the first half and put the pressure on the home side, Ardmore Marist took a 17-0 lead into the break. The club’s president Glen Flavell credited Papakura for their early pressure.

“The second half for us was a much better performance, but in saying that Papakura really took the game to us in that first 40 minutes. They held their defensive line really well.”

“For us this game was about getting back into the groove. Our results have been a bit up and down so far, it’s early days but we really wanted the boys to gel on the field. We didn’t get the performance we wanted but we got the result we wanted. Five points for us was a really important outcome and we’re happy to come away with the bonus point win.”

Vini Iosua had a great game for Ardmore Marist at openside flanker. He scored a hat trick and credit must also go to Ray Laulala who directed the team well and returned to form.

It was an important day for the Ardmore Marist club because it was sponsors day. They had 10 teams at home and all five of their senior teams, including the women’s team, played on home soil. Two premier players had their blazer games, Sione Hifo and Louis Kapeteni.

Bombay Gough Cat came away with a 40-19 victory over Manurewa at Mountfort Park. Bombay dominated the first half, but Manurewa fought back hard in the second spell.

Bombay coach Jeff Marr said they were really happy with the way they played in the first 40 minutes.

“We only had a couple of things to tidy up after the first half. We led 33-0 at the break so we pretty much dominated right from the start. But I think we just let it slip in the second half and Manurewa are a really good side and they obviously got a bit of a growling at half time. They fronted up in the second half and we got a few young guys on in that second spell, blooded a few new boys. Overall we were pretty happy, it’s not often you get to put points on Manurewa.”

Marr is hoping to have his full strength side back in the next couple of weeks. Bombay had four key players missing against Manurewa and Piers Francis is playing well for the Blues. They rested halfback Liam Daniela who suffered a minor hip injury last week. Toni Pulu also played half a game for Bombay, with the Chiefs having a bye. He came off at half time with a tiny calf niggle, but he’s expected to link back up with the Chiefs this week.

Counties Power Cup holders Patumahoe Hotel came away with a 23-6 victory over Waiuku Brian James Contracting in their fixture in Waiuku. They are now undefeated after six games.

Patumahoe coach John Penberthy said it was a tough battle.

“The game was tough and that’s expected when you go out to Waiuku. They fronted up in the forwards and put us under pressure at times but we showed good composure to pull through in the second half and get the win.”

Penberthy credited prop Kamaliele Sakalia who had another strong game, and Riley Hohepa who he said keeps going from strength to strength running the show.

“We have a massive game next week against Onewhero, as it’s Siua Poole’s 100th game for the club. He’s been with us since 2008, he had a stint away up in Hong Kong but then he came back. He captained our side to a championship in 2009 and hopefully the boys get up for his 100th game on Saturday.”

Karaka defeated Drury 121-0 at Drury Domain. They ran in 19 tries, with Kalione Hala, Asa Lehauli, Sione Anga’aelangi, Harry Luteru and Desma Liaina all scoring two tries each.

Pukekohe Mitre 10 Mega beat Weymouth 78-7 at Puni 1. George Maka scored a hat trick for Pukekohe and Nathan De Thierry chimed in with 23 points.

Patumahoe sit at the top of the Challenge Cup Premier standings on 28, with Karaka, Onewhero and Bombay all three points back on 25.

In the Don Shuker Cup Premier Reserve, Ardmore Marist Harcourt’s proved too good for Papakura Ray White, coming away with a 86-5 victory. Karaka defeated Drury 85-0. It was a tight one between Te Kauwhata Trailers & Cabins and Onewhero Hinemoa Produce/Livestock NZ, with Onewhero taking the win 27-24. Bombay Pokeno Bacon only just beat Manurewa 8-5, Pukekohe defeated Puni 47-10 and Patumahoe Hutton Builders beat Waiuku 33-0.

In the Massey Cup Under 21 competition, Bombay and Karaka had a tight tussle, with Bombay just getting the victory 27-24. Pukekohe defeated Patumahoe 31-15 and Ardmore Marist Ross Roof Group beat Waiuku 31-13.

The Under 20’s had some pre season fixtures with Pukekohe defeating University 39-0 and Beachlands Maraetai proving too good for Leamington 100-7.

In the Under 85kg matches, Bombay Lincoln Farms beat Waiuku 38-3, Ardmore Marist Harcourt’s defeated Onewhero 50-10 and Patumahoe Pak ‘N’ Save took the win over Karaka 42-10.

Our women’s teams produced some great results over their Auckland rivals, with Manurewa beating the Ponsonby Fillies 20-14 and Ardmore Marist winning a tight one over Auckland Marist 29-24.
