Counties Power Heat secure Sunday win over Otago Spirit

The Counties Power Heat have picked up their second win on the bounce in the Farah Palmer Cup with a convincing 39-7 win over the Otago Spirit at Navigation Homes Stadium.

JP Faamausili’s side improves its record to two wins and a loss through their opening three matches to be sitting third in the Premiership standings.

“We got the win but the score didn’t reflect how the game actually went,” captain Hazel Tubic told Counties Sports Hub.

“There were patches where we were dominating but we didn’t really come away with points so we really had to fight to get those points.

“It was a period before and after halftime where we did get those points – I think they had a sin bin at the time – and that let us be able to spin it wide.

“The rest of the game was a bit of an arm-wrestle.”

After their first up loss to Canterbury, the Heat have looked a much better side in the past two weeks and Tubic feels there has been some real improvement made.

“I think we have been trying to build each week. That Canterbury game wasn’t what we wanted to put out onto the park. We came back and got the win last week and this week we were able to build further on that.

“A work-on was keeping the ball for more than two phases and we were definitely able to do that.”

The Heat’s next match is against the Wellington Pride at Sky Stadium in the capital on Saturday.
